Originally a 90s indie comic by Steve Stern and Dan Cote, Zen Intergalactic Ninja is a sleek blue alien ninja roaming the galaxy to protect worlds from evil. In the Recycled Heroes toyline by Playmates (released in 1994), his mission hit closer to home: fighting pollution on Earth.
Each figure carried an eco-friendly theme, but with the over-the-top design Playmates was famous for (think TMNT energy). Zen faced bizarre villains representing filth and waste: Garbage Man, Lead Head, Toxic Terror — all drenched in neon colors, slime textures, and wacky accessories.
The packaging boasted recycling messages and eco-friendly branding, though the toys themselves were pure 90s plastic glory.
The line featured:
Multiple versions of Zen (classic gear, eco-tech armor).
Allies like Apex and Cardboard Kid.
Vehicles and playsets styled after junkyards and toxic plants.
Though short-lived, Zen Intergalactic Ninja – Recycled Heroes remains a collector’s gem — a perfect example of the era’s “eco-hero” craze, drenched in neon and nostalgia.
