Stargate: from the big screen to pop culture hyperspace

In 1994, Roland Emmerich brought us Stargate, a sci-fi adventure mixing archaeology, Egyptian mythology, and interstellar travel. The plot follows Colonel Jack O’Neil (Kurt Russell) and Egyptologist Daniel Jackson (James Spader) as they uncover the Stargate — an ancient device allowing instant travel to distant worlds.

Passing through the shimmering wormhole, they arrive on a planet resembling ancient Egypt, ruled by the ruthless alien Ra (Jaye Davidson), posing as a god. The story blends rebellion, ancient mysteries, and large-scale battles.

The film’s success led to a vast expanded universe, most notably Stargate SG-1 (1997–2007), which greatly expanded the lore with new enemies, allies, and worlds.
