Released in 1987 by Mattel, the Mad Scientist toy line gave kids the chance to play as a wacky scientist making disgusting, hilarious experiments. It was part of the 80s craze for gross-out toys, alongside Garbage Pail Kids and Creepy Crawlers.
Highlights of the line included:
Dissect-an-Alien: cut open a rubber alien and pull out its weird guts.
Make a Monster: build-your-own monster kits with mix-and-match parts.
Slime kits: because no 80s toy was complete without neon green slime.
Monster Lab playset: the full “mad scientist” laboratory experience.
With its cartoonish, grotesque designs and tagline “So Gross, So Funny, So Mad!”, the line hit the sweet spot for kids who loved goo, gore, and giggles.
Though short-lived, Mad Scientist remains a cult favorite, with collectors now hunting down intact sets — especially those rare unopened slime packs.
