Madelman 2050 – Exin’s magnetic heroes against the Zarkons (1988-1989)

In the late 1980s, Spain delivered its own answer to G.I. Joe with the Madelman 2050 line, produced by Exin between 1988 and 1989. Combining the articulated military toy trend with the sci-fi aesthetics of the era, this series introduced a fresh universe where the heroic C.O.T.A. Force battled the fearsome alien invaders known as the Zarkons.

Standing about 3.75 inches (9.5 cm) tall, the figures followed the scale popularized by Hasbro but featured unique innovations. Each toy contained magnetic components in the feet or chest, enabling interactive play such as detection and attraction during battles. Their construction emphasized durable articulation, while the designs blended futuristic uniforms, colorful helmets, and advanced weaponry.

Among the standout characters were Lagard, the towering Zarkon leader, and his 1989 repaint version Alactro-Lagard. Opposing them, the C.O.T.A. Men represented humanity’s resistance, equipped with suits and weapons powered by mysterious Magnetron energy.

Often remembered as Europe’s alternative to G.I. Joe, Madelman 2050 remains a beloved vintage line that merged science fiction, military action, and interactive play into a unique collectible universe.
