Mickey Club du Livre – When Disney came home

Long before streaming and smartphones, children in the 1970s, 80s, and 90s had a monthly date with magic: the arrival of the Mickey Club du Livre, or “Mickey Book Club.” This beloved subscription service brought the world of Disney straight to children’s mailboxes — and into their hearts.

Created in 1971 by Hachette-Disney, the club offered beautifully illustrated hardback books featuring classic Disney characters like Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy, Scrooge McDuck, Bambi, and Dumbo, as well as adaptations of Disney movies and original stories.

Each delivery came in a colorful envelope and often included stickers, posters, or surprise gifts, making kids feel like they were part of a secret club. The books were printed in a square, sturdy format, designed to last — and they did, surviving decades of bedtime readings and Saturday afternoons.

For many families, the Mickey Club du Livre became a cherished ritual: opening the package, flipping through the fresh pages, and rediscovering favorite characters. Its success lay in combining education and emotion — teaching kids to read while feeding their imagination.
