Description

Banjo-Kazooie is a series of platform video games created by Rare in 1998. It features a bear named Banjo and a red bird named Kazooie, both controlled by the player, in adventures in which the witch Grunty is the main antagonist.

The first game in the series, Banjo-Kazooie, was released for Nintendo 64 in 1998. It was followed by Banjo-Tooie in 2000, also for Nintendo 64. Then, after Rare was acquired by Microsoft in 2002, Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge was released on Game Boy Advance in 2003. This marked the end of the series on Nintendo consoles. Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts was released in 2008 for Xbox 360. Rare also develops Banjo-Pilot for Game Boy Advance, a racing game using the license released in 2005.

On February 10, 2015, six years after the release of Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts (the last game in the series to date), studio Playtonic Games, founded by former Rare employees, announces “Project Ukulele”, a game described as a “spiritual sequel” to Banjo-Kazooie. The game, funded on Kickstarter and henceforth dubbed Yooka-Laylee, was released on April 11, 2017 on Microsoft Windows, OS X, Linux, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and on December 14, 2017 on Nintendo Switch. In Autumn 2019, Banjo and Kazooie are released as additional fighters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on Nintendo Switch.
