Created by Jim Davis in 1978, Garfield is a big, orange, sarcastic cat with a deep love for lasagna and an equally deep hatred for Mondays. Living with his awkward bachelor owner Jon Arbuckle and the endlessly cheerful (and dim-witted) dog Odie, Garfield’s life revolves around eating, sleeping, complaining… and repeating.
The Garfield comic strip quickly became a global hit, thanks to its universal themes — laziness, food obsession, and unapologetic grumpiness. In the 80s and 90s, Garfield was everywhere: books, calendars, mugs, plush toys, and, most memorably, cartoons.
The most beloved adaptation remains Garfield and Friends (1988–1994), a Saturday morning classic mixing Garfield’s antics with U.S. Acres stories. With humor that worked for both kids and adults, it became a staple of retro TV.
The brand spawned:
Dozens of comic collections translated worldwide.
Two CGI movies (2004, 2006) with Bill Murray as Garfield’s voice.
Multiple modern animated series, including The Garfield Show.
Decades later, Garfield still reigns as the patron saint of laziness and sarcastic humor — because honestly, who hasn’t had a Garfield day?
