In the 1980s, Hong Kong–based Sungold made a name for itself with cheap but fun toy lines like Galaxy Warriors (MOTU knock-offs). Riding the robot craze, they launched MX Space Robots, a line clearly inspired by Transformers and Gobots — but with their own oddball twist.
These figures, sold on bright blister cards in supermarkets, typically stood about 10 cm tall, with:
chrome parts for a futuristic shine,
removable laser guns,
sometimes even basic transformations into crude vehicles or space modules.
There was no cartoon, no comic tie-in — just toys, pure and simple. While Hasbro and Bandai dominated the premium robot market, Sungold thrived in the bargain aisles.
Today, MX Space Robots are highly collectible, especially carded originals, prized for their mix of kitschy sci-fi design and knock-off charm. They embody the wild west of 80s toy manufacturing.
