Lamprey “Sonic Fighter” – Cobra’s naval elite
Within the G.I. Joe universe, the Lampreys serve as Cobra’s elite naval pilots and amphibious troopers. First introduced in 1985 as the crew of the fearsome Cobra Moray Hydrofoil, they debuted in Marvel’s G.I. Joe comic #40, showcasing their critical role in Cobra’s maritime operations. Chosen from Cobra’s best soldiers, Lampreys undergo grueling training in diving, naval combat, and endurance. Their purpose is simple: to dominate the seas and secure Cobra’s supremacy over global waters.
They also appear in the Sunbow animated series, easily identified by their sleek amphibious suits. In the episode “Cobra Quake” (Season 2, Episode 22), they are portrayed as a disciplined strike force, unwaveringly loyal to Cobra’s cause.
In 1991, Hasbro reintroduced them through the Sonic Fighters line with the Lamprey “Sonic Fighter”, enhanced by an electronic sound backpack. This update captured the early 90s fascination with interactive toys while keeping the Lampreys’ legacy intact as Cobra’s unchallenged masters of the oceans.
