Pokémon (pronounced [pɔ.ke.mɔn], known in Japan as Pocket Monsters) is a franchise created by Satoshi Tajiri in 1995, present in particular in video games, in series published by Nintendo. According to Nintendo statistics for 2010, Pokémon games sold around 250 million units. The Pokémon Red and Blue video game sold over 30 million copies, making it the best-selling video game ever.

The franchise is also exploited in anime, manga and trading card games. In the animated series of the same name, the main character, Sacha, travels through various fictional regions to catch new kinds of eponymous monsters, a concept also found in the franchise's video games. Pokémon has had a major cultural impact in the countries where it has been introduced, including Japan, the United States, Canada, France and other European countries.
