Robin Hood is Disney Studios' 27th animated feature and 21st animated classic. Released in 1973, it was inspired by both the legend of Robin Hood and the Roman de Renart, a collection of medieval French stories from the 11th and 13th centuries.

Disney Studios had been considering adapting the Roman de Renart since the 1930s. Many ideas from this project were taken up again to adapt the legend of the English vigilante thief, notably the use of anthropomorphic animals as characters. Ken Anderson's project was approved by Walt Disney shortly before his death in 1966, and production of Robin Hood began.

The production was marked by the reuse of animated elements from previous Disney productions, while actors more or less reproduced earlier performances: for example, Phil Harris, who played Baloo the bear in The Jungle Book (1967), once again played a bear, Little John.
