Wicked (1995): The Dark Reimagining of Oz That Became a Global Cultural Phenomenon
Wicked originated in 1995 with the novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire. Reinterpreting the world of Oz created by L. Frank Baum, the novel shifted focus from Dorothy to Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West.
The 2003 Broadway musical adaptation, featuring music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, transformed Wicked into one of the most successful productions in modern theatre history. Its signature song “Defying Gravity” became a cultural milestone.
The 2024 film adaptation Wicked directed by Jon M. Chu further expanded the franchise’s global reach.
Wicked explores themes of identity, prejudice, and the construction of villainy, offering a reinterpretation of good and evil within the Oz mythology.
