Launched by Capcom in 1987, Mega Man (originally Rockman in Japan) quickly rose to fame as one of gaming’s most iconic heroes. With his signature blue armor and Mega Buster arm cannon, he became a defining figure of the 8-bit era and beyond.
The original NES game introduced Mega Man as a robot built by Dr. Light to stop the evil Dr. Wily and his army of Robot Masters. The series’ unique twist was revolutionary: after defeating a boss, Mega Man would gain that boss’s special weapon, allowing players to tackle levels in different strategic orders.
Over the decades, the franchise has expanded into more than 50 titles, spanning multiple subseries like Mega Man X, Mega Man Zero, Battle Network, and Legends. With challenging platforming, unforgettable chiptune music, and colorful design, Mega Man became a cornerstone of classic gaming.
Beyond the consoles, the Blue Bomber also inspired cartoons, comics, manga, and merchandise, cementing his place as a pop culture icon. Even today, Mega Man continues to symbolize retro gaming’s golden age and Capcom’s legacy of innovation.
