Hulk: from Bruce Banner’s lab to collector shelves

Created in 1962 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Hulk first appeared in The Incredible Hulk #1. The premise: after exposure to a gamma ray explosion, scientist Bruce Banner transforms into a massive green monster with incredible strength whenever he gets angry. Equal parts hero and fugitive, Hulk’s story is one of tragedy and power.

In the 70s, Hulk hit TV fame with The Incredible Hulk (1977–1982), starring Bill Bixby as Banner and Lou Ferrigno as Hulk, bringing a more human, dramatic take to the character. The sad piano outro and slow transformation sequences became iconic.

On the big screen, versions ranged from Ang Lee’s Hulk (2003) to the Marvel Cinematic Universe portrayals by Edward Norton and later Mark Ruffalo, mixing drama with blockbuster action.

Merchandising has been endless:

  • Mego figures in the 70s.

  • Highly detailed Marvel Legends series.

  • Plush toys, busts, statues, and even Hulk-themed vehicles.

  • Cartoon versions like Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H.

Today, Hulk remains a Marvel icon, symbolizing raw strength, and a must-have in any geek collection.
