First introduced in 2003 in the animated series X-Men: Evolution, X-23 quickly became one of Marvel’s most powerful and emotionally gripping characters. Created by Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost, she made her comic debut in NYX #3 (2004), immediately striking readers with her mix of rage, trauma, and vulnerability.
Born Laura Kinney, she is a female clone of Wolverine, created by the Weapon X program from Logan’s recovered DNA. Raised in captivity, conditioned as a living weapon, and trained to kill without hesitation, Laura’s childhood is defined by manipulation, pain, and survival.
Like Wolverine, she has a healing factor, heightened senses, and adamantium claws — two in each hand and one in each foot, giving her a brutal and unique fighting style.
Over time, Laura fights not only enemies but her own conditioning. Her story revolves around reclaiming agency, building relationships, and learning to be more than what she was engineered to be. Eventually, after Logan’s death, she takes up his mantle and becomes the new Wolverine, stepping out of his shadow while honoring his legacy.
Her live-action debut in Logan (2017), played by Dafne Keen, remains one of the most acclaimed portrayals of a young superhero — raw, fierce, and emotionally devastating.
X-23 represents the struggle between nature and construction, trauma and freedom — a character whose journey embodies violence transformed into hope.
